How the Superheat Calculator Works
Three steps between you and a verified saturation reading no chart flipping required.
Confirm the system uses a fixed orifice
Superheat charging applies to fixed-orifice and piston metering devices, not TXV systems.
Enter suction line pressure and temperature
Read both directly from your gauges and a clamp-on thermometer on the suction line.
Get an instant superheat value
The calculator converts pressure to saturation temperature and subtracts it from your actual suction line temperature.
Superheat Charging, Explained in Plain Terms
Superheat measures how much warmer the refrigerant vapor is than its saturation point the standard charging reference for fixed-orifice systems.
Target Superheat vs. Measured Superheat
Measured superheat is what your gauges and thermometer show right now. Target superheat is the ideal value for current conditions, typically calculated from indoor wet-bulb and outdoor dry-bulb temperature using the manufacturer's target superheat chart. Charging is correct when measured superheat matches target superheat, not any fixed universal number.
Why Fixed-Orifice Systems Use Superheat, Not Subcooling
A fixed-orifice or piston metering device doesn't actively regulate flow the way a TXV does, so the system's superheat shifts predictably with charge level, making it a reliable charging indicator. Subcooling on a fixed-orifice system is far less consistent and isn't the standard method for this device type.
Common Superheat Charging Mistakes
The most common mistake is applying subcooling logic or a subcooling target to a fixed-orifice system, which leads directly to an incorrect charge. The second most common mistake is skipping the target superheat calculation and charging to a memorized "normal" number instead of the conditions-adjusted target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Superheat measures the suction line and applies to fixed-orifice systems. Subcooling measures the liquid line and applies to TXV systems.
There isn't one fixed number target superheat changes with indoor and outdoor conditions and should be calculated for the current conditions, not assumed.
Yes, both A2L refrigerants are included with saturation data checked against current manufacturer specs.
Use the subcooling calculator instead TXV systems are charged by subcooling, not superheat.
