What Is Puron Advance?
Carrier's newest residential and light-commercial systems are moving away from R-410A to a lower-GWP refrigerant it markets under its own brand name.
Puron Advance Is Carrier's Name for R-454B
Puron Advance is Carrier and Bryant's trade name for R-454B, a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant designed to meet the AIM Act's low-GWP phasedown targets. It is not a new chemical exclusive to Carrier the same refrigerant ships under Chemours' Opteon XL41 name and Honeywell's Solstice N41 name but Carrier's Infinity series dataplates and service literature will only reference it as Puron Advance.
Puron vs. Puron Advance
Puron was Carrier's original branded name for R-410A, introduced when the industry phased out R-22. Puron Advance is the newer generation, used for R-454B on Carrier's latest Infinity-series equipment. The two are not interchangeable a system built for Puron (R-410A) should never be charged with Puron Advance (R-454B), since the two refrigerants have different pressure curves and A2L handling requirements.
Servicing Infinity Series Equipment
Infinity-series units built on the newest platform are the most likely to specify Puron Advance, while Comfort-series and older packaged rooftop equipment typically stay on standard R-410A. Always confirm against the model prefix table above, since Carrier is running both refrigerant generations in parallel during the transition period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Check the model number prefix against the lookup table above, or read the dataplate on the outdoor unit directly it lists the exact factory refrigerant type.
Yes. Puron Advance is Carrier and Bryant's marketing name for R-454B, the same refrigerant sold by other manufacturers as Opteon XL41 or Solstice N41.
No. Puron Advance (R-454B) systems are engineered for a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant with different pressure characteristics than R-410A, and mixing the two can damage the compressor or create a safety hazard.
Code 13 indicates a low-pressure switch trip, which is usually a sign of an undercharge or a refrigerant leak that needs to be located and repaired before recharging.
