R-410A vs. R-32 vs. R-454B: Which One Do You Need?
All three run in overlapping equipment categories here's how they actually differ.
| Feature | R-410A | R-32 | R-454B |
|---|---|---|---|
| GWP (100-yr) | 2,088 | 675 | 466 |
| ASHRAE Class | A1 (non-flammable) | A2L (mildly flammable) | A2L (mildly flammable) |
| Energy Efficiency | Baseline | Higher | Slightly higher than R-410A |
| Best Use | Existing residential & light-commercial systems | New high-efficiency mini-splits & heat pumps | New residential systems replacing R-410A |
| Availability | Wide, current standard | Growing, newer equipment | Growing, newest equipment |

EPA Section 608 Notice
R-410A purchases require valid EPA Section 608 technician certification on file before checkout, per federal regulation. R-410A is classified ASHRAE A1 (non-flammable, lower toxicity) and does not require A2L-rated recovery or storage equipment. Always follow manufacturer handling and PPE guidance when connecting or recovering refrigerant.

What Every Technician Should Know About R-410A
The refrigerant behind most of today's residential service calls, explained in plain terms.
R-410A Is a Blend, Not a Single Molecule
R-410A is a near-azeotropic blend of R-32 and R-125, which is why it's always charged as a liquid rather than a vapor charging a blend as vapor risks fractionation, where the two components separate and the system ends up with an off-ratio charge. This is a key handling difference from single-component refrigerants like R-32 on its own.
Why R-410A Is Being Phased Down, Not Banned Outright
The AIM Act's phasedown schedule targets R-410A's relatively high GWP of 2,088, gradually reducing how much can be produced and imported each year not banning it in a single step. That means R-410A remains legal to buy, sell, and service for the foreseeable future, even as new equipment shifts toward lower-GWP alternatives like R-32 and R-454B.
Servicing Existing R-410A Systems Long-Term
Because so much of the current residential fleet runs R-410A, service and recharge demand isn't disappearing it's simply not going into new equipment anymore. Reclaimed and recycled R-410A supply is expected to play a growing role in servicing existing systems as the phasedown continues, similar to how reclaimed R-22 supports legacy systems today.
Frequently Asked Questions
No R-410A is being phased down under the AIM Act, meaning production volume is gradually reduced, not banned outright. It remains legal to buy and service for the foreseeable future.
Yes. Federal EPA Section 608 rules require valid technician certification on file before purchase.
No. R-410A is ASHRAE-classified A1, meaning non-flammable and lower toxicity, unlike the newer A2L refrigerants R-32 and R-454B.
No. Never mix different refrigerant types in the same system or cylinder each has a different composition and pressure curve.
R-410A is a blend of two refrigerants. Charging it as vapor risks fractionation, where the components separate and leave the system with an incorrect ratio.
